Teaching Interests
My basic teaching philosophy is that effective teaching can only be achieved if students are prepared to come to class to be taught and to work. Teaching for me is a mental ‘work out’ and I believe that prepared students should expect a mental ‘work out’ in class. I think that students need to be constantly reminded that learning and studying are active pursuits and that they are responsible for playing an equal role in the learning process. I insist that students take ownership for the quality of their educational experience, and I assist them in that pursuit by clearly stating my role in helping them earn a quality education. I believe very strongly in accountability of both the instructor and the student in trying to achieve a learning environment. I personally would like to get away from the idea of trying to make classes ‘fun’ as I believe that this is an overrated and much abused term, and often the line between learning and leisure is obscure. I believe that the pendulum has swung too far in pursuit of ‘fun’ in our classes and I would like to see a return to the midline where all classes are first and foremost challenging and that students come to regard these challenges as exceedingly rewarding experiences. As a university-level teacher, I think it is my duty to engage students through open class discussions and I actively seek questions and feedback from students during class. My teaching style could therefore be described as always challenging and engaging, and perhaps even conversational. I believe that every student can make a contribution to every class and I try and convince students that they too can teach their peers and their instructors. Learning everyday from my students is what I regard as a real perk of the teaching profession, and my office door is always open.
